{"id":15,"date":"2006-04-30T10:18:41","date_gmt":"2006-04-30T18:18:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tranzoa.net\/~alex\/blog\/?p=15"},"modified":"2006-04-30T10:19:12","modified_gmt":"2006-04-30T18:19:12","slug":"tracking-a-portfolio-relative-to-the-market","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tranzoa.net\/~alex\/blog\/?p=15","title":{"rendered":"Tracking a portfolio relative to the market"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, I&#8217;ve built a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tranzoa.net:8008\/~alex\/cgi-bin\/relative_portfolio.py\">web based front end<\/a> to portfolio_track.py.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is to track how well a stock portfolio is doing against a market average.<\/p>\n<p>The front end uploads a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tranzoa.net:8008\/~alex\/portfolio_history.htm\">text file<\/a> and <strong>slowly<\/strong> presents an HTML listing of the output of portfolio_track.py.<\/p>\n<p>For &#8220;the market&#8221;, the web front end uses the S&#038;P 500, no fees and dividends.<\/p>\n<p>Other market averages have, in the last couple of years, done slightly better than the S&#038;P. But we&#8217;re talking a couple percent, maybe. Not enough to write home about.<\/p>\n<p>This is all real fun, of course, since my own portfolio&#8217;s printout shows I&#8217;m a genius. Maybe some time soon I&#8217;ll be a dunce and won&#8217;t spend so much time printing numbers to make myself feel secure in genioushood. \ud83d\ude42 After all, if you read something (or hear it, or whatever), you&#8217;ll believe it. &#8230; Yet another reason to send yourself hundreds of spam emails a day telling yourself that others are getting huge fun from whatever it is you should be doing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, I&#8217;ve built a web based front end to portfolio_track.py.
